Hypothyroidism

What is Hypothyroidism?

Hypothyroidism happens when thyroid activity is low. The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped organ in the front of the neck that produces several hormones critical to regulating the metabolism of every cell in the body. It is the most prevalent disorder of the thyroid. While over 10 million Americans are diagnosed with this condition every year, millions are unaware that they have hypothyroidism. In recent years, thyroid issues have been on the rise and are now considered an epidemic by many physicians. Some reasons for the upsurge in these issues include environmental toxins, medication side effects, and stress.

  • Fatigue
  • Cold hands and feet

What are the Causes?

The most common cause of hypothyroidism is Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. This is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks the thyroid gland, causing thyroid inflammation and underproduction of thyroid hormones. While both men and women may suffer from this condition, it is five to 10 times more likely in women. Some risk factors for hypothyroidism include:

  • Genetic predisposition
  • Other hormone imbalances like insulin resistance seen with diabetes
  • Food allergies
  • Stress
  • Less common are failure of the pituitary gland or a pituitary tumor.
