Types of Diabetes

Diabetes is a condition that disrupts the body’s ability to use glucose (blood sugar). Because glucose is the essential fuel for cellular functions, the disruption of its use can lead to substantial complications. When the body utilizes it properly, glucose enters the bloodstream, and the pancreas releases insulin to help your cells absorb it.

  • Type 1 Diabetes results when the body does not produce insulin, causing sugar to build up in the bloodstream. Type 1 diabetes is considered an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system mistakingly attacks healthy insulin-producing cells in the pancreas.
  • Type 2 Diabetes results when the body produces low levels of insulin or the body becomes resistant to insulin.

In both cases, blood sugars can rise to unmanageable levels over time, potentially leading to other life-threatening diseases like heart disease.

Symptoms of Diabetes

Symptoms of diabetes will vary depending on the type. Type 1 diabetes symptoms will typically develop suddenly. Type 2 diabetes symptoms appear gradually and are often mistaken for other illnesses. Some warning signs of diabetes may include:

  • Unexpected weight loss
  • Constant thirst and hunger
  • Frequent urination
  • Irritability and mood swings
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Slow-healing wounds
  • Numbness in your extremities

Diabetes Treatment

After a comprehensive evaluation, Dr. Emi will work closely with you to develop a personalized treatment plan that encompasses all aspects of your physical condition and everyday lifestyle.

Type 1 diabetes is usually treated with insulin and suggested lifestyle changes. Dr. Emi will work with each patient individually to assess their needs.

For patients with Type 2 diabetes, insulin may also be prescribed. Dr. Emi has had astounding success treating Type 2 diabetes patients with lifestyle changes alone. With the help of dietary and nutritional counseling, accompanied by meal and exercise planning, reversing your Type 2 diabetes is possible.
